Wall Decor for Homes and Offices

A new way of enhancing wall decor in homes and offices to create a warm and positive feeling to the environment, we live in and work in. Like looking through a window the beauty of nature is stimulating to the senses. As we create our environment, photographs can add to this pleasure when nature is not available, choosing inspiration, beauty and comfort through art photographs of choice.

Our senses are so fine tuned by past experiences that we can imagine what we see with all our sense, seeing, feeling…My brand is “feeling more deeply about photography” For me it is all about the feeling I get when I enjoy and study a fine piece of art being moved by it’s beauty.

My brother in law has beautiful kiwi vines and I saw the new growth and how beautiful they are. Love new life. In time a harvest of fruit and living food! It is a joy and delight to watch new growth and the unique colors as the light brings all to life.

The Bromoil Process was an early photographic process that was very popular with the Pictorialists during the first half of the twentieth century. The soft, paint-like qualities of the prints are very typical for this genre, and have recently led to some art photographers using the process again.

The bromoil process was based on the oil print, whose origins go back to the mid-nineteenth century. A drawback of oil prints was that the gelatin used was too slow to permit an enlarger to be used, so that negatives had to be the same dimensions as the positives. After G.E.H. Rawlins published a 1904 article on the oil print process, E.J. Wall in 1907 described theoretically how it should be possible to use a smaller negative in an enlarger to produce a silver bromide positive, which should then be bleached and hardened, to be inked afterwards as in the oil process. C Welborne Piper then executed this theory in practice, and so the bromoil process was born.

I start glassing this portrait to depict a warm feeling, I love the old masters burnt umber look and so it toned that color down to show a warm brown. To create a photo that is or can be considered an art piece we must begin with the pose- composition- expression to give one the feeling, to study and evolve our thoughts. When we accomplish our vision then it is up to the viewer to read in the message they are capable of and appreciate it's beauty.

This image I cooled down and cut back the color for a look of hand colored feel. I toned it down to make the person have rose cheeks and flesh washed out and added blue to give the viewer a different feel.

I used photo shop to add dry brush very low setting- then on top I put the filter poster edges again low capacity. This is my final finish for the wall it has to be large at least 24 inch to be view from a proper distance - don't smell the art piece view it from the proper distance please. Every art piece has a proper viewing distance.

My client loved this image that was part of the back yard, where they entertained and loved to relax. They asked me if I could capture the feeling of this area that may represent there art of living. Being artist in there own right it was a challenge for me to produce something that excelled mere photographic imagery, but kept the feeling of there place.

The photography was the least challenging because of the years of practice in operating my cameras and learning about the light, manipulation of both. When I invited two photographers from each of the western provinces to my studio and hired an expert in Photoshop in 1998 his lectures and hands on approach, helped. We were encouraged to add in the name all the layers we used to make the image more painterly; but for me I have felt I needed to approach each image afresh so I have no easy way to fall back on and produce the same look over and over again. My lab printed the image on canvass, adding hand painting made the image unique and personal to the buyers to purchase one of a kind art piece from me.

Fear factor:
Was inspired when I slowed down my shutter and moved my camera up wards to create a feeling of movement and the unreal-which can spook us; because we are unfamiliar with what has not yet been seen. Especially if it is dark and dreary-from our child hood the stories we were told scary one in particular. This image has a sense of the above and we precede it based on our past experiences. The technique is simple slow down the stutter- experiment with that 30th of a second and keep lowering the shutter until you got what seems to be right for you. The subject matter is equally important-needs to fit what is within our mind...

There are times when what we don't understand can stand in the way of learning more about ourselves and to capture that emotion in a photograph is; perhaps unrealistic but never the less an attempted that we should try, like a poetic expression from the heart! Capturing this images in an unreal way not only gave me a vision into the subconscious mind, but a dream of an interpretation of reality. The trees are barren and yet there exists life around them in a distance, with motion and strong dark colors with splashes of green but not on the trees in front, strong but spoke, feeling but not alive to reality, movement but dead.

Dreaming-came about when she came from Africa to visit her sister. I had photographed her sisters wedding and she came in and asked if I could photograph her in a more passionate artistic way. I made an appointment for a consultation-what I always have before a session were we go over what she has in mind and then I educate...not to look at the camera but at me so my body language and facial expressions coupled with my tone of voice and words-the inner self of my subject may appear!

My lighting consisted of a soft box and a translucent screen in from of my soft box, to even soften my light more. The concept of northern window light. A soft reflector on the other side, to open up the left side of her face. Portrait painters used window light to illuminate there subjects for effect, to see light on there subjects face. I love the window light effect and the softness of it!

The pose came about by making my subject comfortable and taking some exposures to settle my subject. My subject never knows when I will push the button on my camera so after a little while they forget the camera, pay attention more to my voice and unconsciously my expression. I do want the client to reveal what is in them at that moment in time-it takes time to learn- the psychology of helping the subject to be free of me and able to let go; of the influence of the surroundings. NLP has helped me to learn my craft in creating a portrait that captures individuals assents- in a fraction of time!

To learn to photograph artistic portraits is a life time of study...

I started with a Nikon D200 and a lens Nikon 18 to 200. I set my camera on portrait which give a softer affect to the image. and this is the image I got, uncropped just as is. The next image has been turned black and white, cropped-over sharpened to the full measure possible. Then I turned it to a chocolate brown-it feels like it was bronzed.

Thanks for the many comments about how I created the photograph of the Snowbirds Canadian flying team. Was asked to go up with them; I chose slide film (transparency film). Because it was impossible to get the sun so big and dramatic-after wards I shot another frame on my slide film of a yellow bottom slightly out of focus-close up and sandwiched the slides together and had the lab produce a 4x5 negative. I took a coarse from Robbin Parry who montaged many of his images that way.

All of us have to hang around this side of heaven--I know there are going to be special days ahead of us. We just have to have eyes to see it--and a master photographer to turn our days into art.

This images capture the architecture and Span's of the Mall, it's uniqueness and brightness; colour is pastel and delicate an impression like a water colour painting. Motion

Life is made up by motion and emotion! As we rush through our day-life we become involved with the speed of life and try to increase this ever changing experience of movement and feeling of our hearts deep desire. Progress is our perception of reality, what we feel and think and see before us…

There is the unknown and we perceive it with our imagination; fear-flight, like a blur of reality, perception. Then there are the known, our experience of the real; because we have see it, handled it, smelled it, tasted it, heard it. Exercised by our five senses the common denominator in our reality, we trust in.

Let us examine our emotion of fear, study the image as if you where running away with the forest in motion but in reality we are in motion with our bodies moving and our minds blurring reality because of fear-not real-or perceived.

Look to the top and it seems as if spirits or other world being are flying through the air above and keeping pace with us to win the race to the place of what is unknown to us. A semblance of reality because we know trees are real and they don’t move and yet there is this motion this emotion stirring up from within our figment of our minds the part that allows us to imagine, dream, dreams beyond reality or that which has not yet been discovered in our real world. Real because we can physically get involved with what we see natural not just with the mind but with our naked eyes-Hurry!

I have walked this path so many times over the years and yet I missed this excitement-fills my mind to dream other possibilities which have not been seen before by me. How much I miss how empty my life must be, because of what I am not aware of and consequently will never know.

To think the thoughts that would keep my imagination a flame; burning with anticipation, open to the unreal the sublime dimensions beyond the boring, unlearnt, how it has always been seen. No a revelation of the spirit world that lies (lays) beyond death to be experienced in this dimension…

OH! How, little we know and yet there is so much to be discovered here and now I feel like a little boy on a man’s errand. May we be given an increase to our burning desire to know to find out to go beyond and back…

Klaus Bohn-Counter Pan

Counter pan

Most of us are familiar with the term panning-when we drag the shutter a bit and move the camera with the subject we want to stay in reality sharpness and blur everything else. Drag the shutter just means to slow down the shutters time for instant set it at ¼ of a second or slower and increase the blurriness of all that surrounds the subject you are trying to keep in focus.

Counter panning is the opposite, instead of fallowing the subject we move the camera in the opposite direction with a slow shutter speed perhaps 1/30 of a second or slower. The challenge is to keep both eyes open so we can see in this case the car coming from the left and going to the right, my camera was moving to the left from the right, I hand held the camera and held my breath; timing of coarse means everything, as you see the car coming you squeeze the button and keep the camera moving left past the car do not stop moving the camera after the shutter is pressed.

The image has a unique feeling in relationship to the movement of the car, it stretches and duplicates as you can see in the number 23 blurred and stretched. The wheels have been increase as if there where a number of wheels front and back. The soft blur give the car a feeling of tremendous speed, with just enough information in the car to see what it is and its purpose, to race.

A good friend of mine Greg told me that this is one of my best photographs I have ever made he should know, he is a very good photographer from Regina.

The most exciting part of the Alaska Cruise was seeing the Hubbard Glacier. Beside me was a professional photographer, Klaus Bohn taking photographs of the calving.I was very interested in purchasing a photo of the calving and Klaus gave me his business card.Having purchased a Giclee photo of the calving, I am reminded of this phenonomin and also of the excellence of Klaus's photography as he has captured nature at it's pinnacle. The photography is awesome and the only thing missing is the sound of those huge pieces of ice as they crashed into the ocean.Thank you, Klaus for your years of expertise and your stunning photography.

Klaus Bohn-Snowbirds

Snowbirds a Canadian fly team of acrobatic flying! When I was asked to go up with them and photograph there fly formation it was a treat and also a challenge, to go through a little for- hand instructions. Putting on the gear was fun but when I was told this is the handle you pull if in emergency and the pilot tells you to pull you have only second to do so I thought to myself I probably will go down with the plane. The difficulty was to lift my camera to my face as we were whipping through space at a well number of G-force and to get the shot I was hope wanting desiring, wow. The photograph was one of my favourite even though I had a number of other images I really liked and were chosen by the team. This image is in my book "50 Principle of Composition in Photography". Hope to share how I created this image in future comments of why I became a photographer and still am a photographer, teacher of photography and author.
